Field Notes

How to tell whether your marketing did anything.

Most owners cannot say which ad, sign, or website produced last month's customers. Two cheap fixes make the answer obvious.

Ask a shop owner in Maury County what their marketing did last month and the honest answer is usually a shrug. There is a sign on Highway 43, a Facebook page somebody's daughter runs, a website from 2019, and an ad in the church bulletin. Customers come in. Nobody knows from where.

That shrug is expensive, because it means every marketing decision is a guess and every vendor can claim credit. The fix is not a dashboard. It is two cheap, boring habits.

Use a different phone number for each thing

Call tracking is a service that gives you a few extra phone numbers that all ring your real line. One goes on the website. One goes on the sign. One goes in the ad. When a call comes in, the number it came through tells you where the customer found you, and the service logs it. It costs less than a tank of gas a month, and within sixty days you know which of your four channels is producing calls and which is decoration.

We run it on our own site, because selling call tracking without using it would be a strange position to take.

Ask, and write it down

The other half is free. When a new customer calls, ask how they found you, and put the answer in the same place every time. A notebook works. A CRM works better because it also does the follow up. The point is that after three months you can look at a list instead of relying on a feeling.

What you will probably find

In our experience with local trades, the website and the Maps listing produce most of the calls, the sign produces some, and the paid ad produces less than it costs. But your business is not the average, and the only way to know is to measure it. Once you can see the answer, the marketing budget stops being an argument and starts being arithmetic.
